Bottle drive to aid Stollery

EDMONTON - Alberta Cans for Kids hopes to raise $100,000 for
Edmonton's Stollery Children's Hospital Foundation by encouraging
people to toss drink cans into specially marked bins at Alberta's
200 bottle depots.
"Donating one can to our campaign is a simple act that every
Albertan can do," Jeff Linton, of the Alberta Bottle Depot
Association, said Tuesday.
"It's good for the environment and it helps kids--our most
important resource."
Linton is confident the campaign can meet its goal since it only
requires that each home donate just one container in the next
year.
Alberta's recovery rate of recyclable beverage containers is one
of the highest in Canada at 81 per cent, says a news release from
the bottle depot association. There are more than 40,000 different
containers eligible for refund in the province and these will all
be accepted as part of the Alberta Cans for Kids program.
This includes drink cans, plastic beverage bottles, beer and
wine bottles, tetra-pak drink boxes, soy, milk and juice cartons
and jugs, and all ready-to-serve containers.
"We are honoured to be Alberta Cans for Kids' first campaign
partner," said Lori Finck of the Stollery Children's Hospital
Foundation.
"Through generous donations and partnerships like this, we are
able to advance the care provided at the Stollery Children's
Hospital. We want to ensure each child has access to the very best
pediatric care when they need it most."
Diana McQueen, parliamentary assistant to Alberta's minister of
Environment, said more than 1.6 billion beverage containers were
recycled in the province in 2008.
"Bottle depots play an important role in helping Albertans
minimize our impact on the environment," she said.
"The government of Alberta commends the Alberta Bottle Depot
Association for developing a new program that allows Albertans to
care for the environment and make a contribution to a worthy cause
like the Stollery Children's Hospital Foundation at the same
time."
